Good Bye to Mr. Braulio

Egidio Tarantola Peloni, patron of the Amaro Braulio
has passed way at age of 75 years old. Signor Egidio was the heir to a family tradition that has its roots in 1826:

it is then that the recipe of Francesco Peloni, son of the pharmacist of the village, which was preserved through the decades until 1875,when production began on a larger scale than one of the most iconic Italian Amaro, based on Gentian, Wormwood, Juniper berries and Achillea Moscata and other secret botanicals.

The Amaro Braulio takes its name from one of the mountains that crown the basin of Bormio, Northen Italy:

on its slopes there are grow and harvested a large part of the herbs, flowers, roots and berries that are used for the production of this drink.

In the first half of 1800c there was a pharmacy in Bormio, opened by Dr. Giuseppe Peloni, born in the early years of the century by one of the oldest and noble families of Bormio, graduated in Chemistry and Pharmacy at the University of Padua . During his life, Giuseppe Peloni took advantage of his knowledge of the virtues of plants and aromatic medicinal herbs, transmitting an important wealth of experience to his son Francesco. It was Francesco Peloni, also a pharmacist, who created numerous infusions and healthy drinks, among which, in 1875, the Amaro Braulio. Like all researchers and inventors, Francesco Peloni was very jealous of his Amaro and never wanted to reveal how many herbs he had used (and in what quantities and proportions) if not to his son Attilio, who in turn was a big fan of medicinal herbs, writing and publishing, in 1936 a precious pamphlet with the emblematic title “In herbis salus”.

The secret has been maintained and continued with until today by Signor Egidio.

Even today, after 130 years, Amaro Braulio has remained faithful to the original recipe and its traditional method of production, but the fact that the herbs are largely spontaneous – in addition to limiting the amount of production – makes this amaro a live product, in harmony with nature, different every year but at the same time, unique and bittersweet!

RIP Mr. Egidio

Haley Forest appointed U.S. Ambassador for ITALICUS

Haley Forest is U.S. Brand Ambassador of ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto, a new spirit that captures the art, poetry and architecture of Italy in liquid form. It is the culmination of Italian spirits expert Giuseppe Gallo’s life-long dream of reviving the Rosolio category, who adds : we are really glad to have Haley in our team, with her international experience, passion and bar skills our brainchild ITALICUS will be at for front of the cocktail culture in US.

Love at First Sip: ITALICUS Rosolio

Haley was introduced to ITALICUS Rosolio at New York’s NoMad Hotel by visiting bar star Alex Kratena, an early proponent of the spirit who supported its London launch. She was immediately smitten, both by the striking bottle design and the notes of bergamot, which appealed to her as a dedicated Earl Grey tea drinker. When approached to represent ITALICUS Rosolio, she seized the opportunity.

Juggling Bartending at Top New York and London Bars with Drinks Journalism

Previously, Haley tended bar at two of New York’s top craft bars, Pouring Ribbons under the tutelage of Joaquín Simó, and Belle Shoals, headed by Pamela Wiznitzer. This marked her return to the U.S. after a long stint in the UK, where she focused on food and drinks journalism and contributed to publications such as BarChick, Thrillist, The Spirits Business and Mixology. She also honed her skills behind the stick through guest bartending gigs at legendary London craft cocktail drinkeries such as Milk & Honey, Happiness Forgets, Ladies & Gentlemen and Portside Parlour.

Pursuing Her Culinary Passion as a Chef in London

Haley moved to London at age 22 and pursued her culinary passion by earning a Grande Diplome in Cuisine and Pastry at the city’s Le Cordon Bleu. While in culinary school, she embraced her “inner ingredient geek” that has served her throughout her career.

Haley cooked at top restaurants like Kettner’s and was drawn to front of house at Polpo and Bocca Di Lupo, as it afforded greater social interaction. This followed Haley earning a Bachelor of Science degree from San Francisco State University in Hospitality: Foodservice Management.

An animal lover, Brooklyn-residing Haley fosters kittens and volunteers in a kitten nursery, while relaxing, she enjoys the ITALICUS Spitz, Salute!

Giuseppe Gallo

ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto, created by leading drinks industry expert Giuseppe Gallo, has won the award for Best New Spirit at the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards 2017. A beautiful Italian liqueur which rediscovers the forgotten rosolio category, ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto was voted for by two panels of over 100 of the most respected individuals in the spirits and cocktail industries. The Spirited Awards which are now in their 11th year and are considered the ‘Oscars’ of the bar world, took place at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans where Giuseppe was present to accept the highly-regarded accolade.

Launched in September 2016, ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto has since been embraced by leading bars and bartenders across the world, including, The American Bar at The Savoy and Dandelyan in London, The Clumsies in Athens, PDT in New York and Quinary in Hong Kong.

ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto is produced at a family-owned distillery established in 1906 in Moncalieri, Torino. Championing the humble bergamot fruit, a citrus from the Italian region of Calabria, it creates a light citrus scent with hints of rose and lavender. On the palate ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto tastes of ripe citrus which is balanced by a light bitter and floral spice, making it perfect for mixing in cocktails and aperitivo style drinks.

On winning the award, Giuseppe comments, “This a huge honour and privilege and I am incredibly humbled. As an independent brand with a small but dedicated team, we couldn’t ask for a higher acknowledgment of our work, especially when voted for by so many who we respect and admire in the industry. This is just the start of our journey as we continue to expand and grow.”

Rosolio was enjoyed in Italy up until the invention of vermouth in the early 19th Century. Falling out of fashion, the tradition remained alive through local family recipes which were passed down, and varied from region to region. Inspired by making Rosolio with his own family when growing up on the Amalfi Coast, Giuseppe wanted to create something that honoured the culture and traditions of the great Italian aperitivo. Therefore ITALICUS Rosolio di Bergamotto is made from 100% Italian ingredients from the North to the South of Italy.

Since being founded in 2007, the Spirited Awards have grown to become one of the prestigious and sought-after awards in the industry. Recognizing writers and brand ambassadors alongside bartenders and bars, the Awards showcase the talent found throughout every aspect of the spirits and cocktail world. “The Spirited Awards get more and more competitive because our industry keeps raising its game every single year,” said Ann and Paul Tuennerman, Co-Founders of Tales of the Cocktail®. “Congrats to this year’s winners on monumental accomplishment.”
